INITIAL ACTIONS ON SCENE - Assessment & response

Once you have entered the premises:

  • Be sure to follow the DRABCD procedure
  • Introduce yourself to a conscious patient and ask for his name. Tell him that you will look after him until the paramedics arrive
  • Assess the patient's condition (see Signs & symptoms)
  • Use the Nonin pulse oximeter to assess the patient's percentage of oxygen saturation and pulse rate. Full instructions here.
  • Ask the patient if he's on medication, and if he is make a note of it. If appropriate help him take the medication
  • Give oxygen as appropriate (see details here)
  • If the patient is unconscious but is breathing (look, listen & feel for 10 seconds) insert an oralpharyngeal airway (if possible) and place him in the recovery position
  • If the patient is unconscious and is not breathing insert an oralpharyngeal airway (if possible) then set up and switching on the AED (Automatic External Defibrillator), and commence CPR. Follow the prompts from the AED and only shock if prompted to do so.
