RESPIRATORY CONDITIONS - Bronchitis
 
Bronchitis is an inflammation of the bronchi (lung airways), resulting in a persistent cough that produces consideration quantities of sputum (phlegm). Bronchitis is more common in smokers and in areas with high atmospheric pollution.
 
Signs & Symptoms
  • Rapid breathing rate (Tachypnoea)
  • Difficulty in breathing (Dyspnoea)
  • Productive cough
  • A bluish colouration of the skin, lips or nails (Cyanosis)
  • Airways may be blocked
Treatment
  • Keep calm and reassure the casualty
  • Let the patient adopt the position most comfortable - usually sitting down
  • Give oxygen therapy (24-28% mask @ 4 litres per minute - but be aware of hypoxic drive)
  • Encourage coughing
  • Constantly monitor the situation
  • Be prepared to ventilate or carry out CPR
